Saturday morning at Warehouse Row, six teams of middle-school students and the architects and engineers serving as their mentors will begin erecting sculptures made of food packaging.
Foods in cans, bags and boxes will form these inventive structures, which are to fit the theme "AmeriCan" The Chattanooga build is part of Canstruction, an international event presented each year by the American Institute of Architects.
This is the 10th year AIA Chattanooga has organized the local event, according to Lisa Williams, executive director. The local builds generate an average of 10,000 pounds of food donations each year for the Chattanooga Area Food Bank, she said.
Saturday's build will last through 3 p.m., then the structures will be judged by a jury of design professionals. The structures will stay up for viewing for one week before the food items are donated.
Saturday evening, AIA Chattanooga and the Food Bank will celebrate the sculptures with an UnCanventional Ball, to be held from 7 to 11 p.m. in the Event Space at Warehouse Row, 1110 Market St.
This year's ball will have a Mardi Gras flair, with hurricane drinks, beads and masks featured. Attendees will munch on food provided by Events With Taste and enjoy music by Flux308. Attire is casually festive.
Tickets to the ball are $41.50 in advance, $45 at the door, with all ticket sales also going to the Food Bank.
