HullaBowloo

Chattanooga Area Food Bank stirring up a fundraiser

There won't be bowling, but participants can make a bowl, visit the bowltique and even come dressed in a bowler hat at the Chattanooga Area Food Bank's fifth annual HullaBowloo on Saturday night.

IF YOU GO* What: HullaBowloo.* When: 7-11 p.m. Saturday.* Where: Chattanooga Area Food Bank, 2009 Curtain Pole Road.* Admission: Sold out.* Phone: 622-1800.* Website: www.chattfoodbank.org.

The fundraising event, held at the Food Bank warehouse just off Amnicola Highway, features live music, dancing, food, open bar, live auction, opportunity to glaze and decorate a bowl and a chance to shop for local pottery.

"People get to see the actual warehouse," said development director Holly Ashley. "They get to see where the money goes. I also hear it's a very good party."

She said last year's HullaBowloo raised $72,000 for the agency's general operating fund. This year's goal for the agency's largest annual monetary fundraiser is $80,000.

Live music will be offered by Rubik's Groove, Matt Downer, Mountain Cove Bluegrass and Pontiac Blues.

Downer, who plays traditional regional music on the banjo and fiddle, and Mountain Cove Bluegrass, whose six members are ages 15-18, are popular repeaters for HullaBowloo, according to Ashley.

Rubik's Cube is an '80s dance party band, while Pontiac Blues is a six-person, soulful blues band.

Live auction choices will include a gourmet dinner for 20 people at the home of Baylor School headmaster Scott Wilson, a Chattanooga staycation package for two and limited-edition handcrafted bowls by local artisans.

Food and drink will be provided by Baylor School, Big River Grille & Brewing Works, Chattanooga Cupcakes, Coca-Cola, Covenant College, Greenlife, Link 41 Sausages, St. John's Restaurant, Stone Cup Roasting Co., Taziki's Mediterranean Cafe and the University of the South.

For a final touch of finery, the event also offers valet parking and coat check.

In addition, attendees can glaze and decorate a bowl and, if they do, can take home one done by another patron during a previous year.

They'll also be able to put together sack packs, which help feed impoverished children at Orchard Knob Middle and Orchard Knob Elementary schools.

Since the event is sold out, though, no tickets will be sold at the door.

The agency, according to information on its website, assists 20,000 people per week with food assistance.
