Swap meet highlights radio-control flyers

Members of the Chattanooga Radio Control Club won't be completely grounded Saturday, but much of the time they spend at their annual Meet the Modelers event will be devoted to the tools of the trade they accumulate.

It's "basically lots of tables, 50-plus, of big and small airplanes with lots of schmoozing going on," said spokesman Paul Wright.

Weather permitting, it still will be a day for soaring, with demonstration flying at hourly intervals. A hands-on, radio-control flight simulator will be available to those who want to take a virtual plane for a spin.

According to Wright, Saturday's event is "part swap meet, part showoff time, part renewing acquaintances" for veteran modelers and pilots. It's also a great opportunity, he says, for newcomers and those who are just curious about the sport to check out the assortment of airplanes, helicopters, radios, tools and gadgets -- especially someone ready to embrace the hobby.

"It's not unusual for someone to get fully equipped with a preowned plane and radio for about $200," he said.

Meet the Modelers will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Shepherd Recreation Complex, 2124 Shepherd Road (take Exit 1A off Highway 153).

Admission is $2 for adults. Limited food concessions will be available.
