The Indian head/buffalo nickel features an Indian head on the obverse side and a buffalo on the reverse. Struck by the U.S. Mint from 1913 to 1938, they were popular with coin engravers, who altered the images.

The 250 available tables sold out earlier this week, meaning a full house of vendors for the Blue Ridge Numismatic Association's 54th annual convention in Dalton, Ga.

According to BRNA officials, dealers and collectors looking to buy, sell and trade all types of coins and currency are represented at the convention each August. This year's show is scheduled 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23-24, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Northwest Georgia Trade & Convention Center, 2211 Dug Gap Battle Road.

In addition to perusing the vendor tables, visitors may opt for one of the educational forums taking place over the weekend.

• Members of the Original Hobo Nickel Society will be in attendance Friday and Saturday, offering insight into how images are carved from the buffalo nickel.

• A Young Numismatics program will start at 1 p.m. Saturday to introduce children to coin collecting.

• Author Pierre Fricke will give a seminar on "Collecting Confederate Paper Money" at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Room BII. All attendees will receive a copy of the 73-page Confederate Money Values Handbook at the conclusion of the seminar.

Admission and parking are free.
