This weekend's two spring festivals - Who-Fest and HubFest - are each marking their seventh anniversaries.
Who-Fest, the folk-art festival in Coolidge Park, will display the work of about 50 exhibitors. Festival director David Smotherman describes it as "an outdoor celebration of folk, outsider, visionary and art-taught artists."
They'll be showing paintings, glass, metalwork, sculpture, jewelry, pottery, furniture, photography and textiles.
"We have a really good core group of artists coming back, but we always have a good rotation of new artists. The last three years' Best In Show winners will all be here, including Charla Steele from last year," says Smotherman.
Dana Rogers has booked eight musical acts to perform over Who-Fest's two days.
HubFest is the community party spread across the grounds of Heritage Park that is hosted by Friends of East Brainerd. This festival draws visitors from across East Hamilton County -- 4,000 just last year -- with its wide range of vendors for shopping, vintage cars for guys' inspections and vehicles for kids to climb over.
Chairwoman Janis Odom says there will be 21 vendors of products ranging from jewelry to makeup to portrait painting, pottery and home-party foods on the park grounds.
A mock-up Civil War hospital staffed with volunteers in period costuming is HubFest's nod to the Battle of Chickamauga's sesquicentennial.
Odom says this year's military emphasis is new. In addition to the Civil War hospital, there will be World War II vehicles, National Guard rocket launcher, storytellers in costume to represent the Civil War, World War II, Vietnam and Iraqi wars. And a bugler will signal the close of each day's activities by playing "Taps."
There will be 50 performers, spread over three stages. Mainstage musicians include T-Ran Gilbert, Anthony Quiles, Charlie Yates, Jennifer Brumlow & Callie Harmon, Ryan Oyer, Cardio Dancers, and McGill and Company.
Kids can even leave the festival with a gift for their moms. Melissa Espy is chairing a kids section of Mother's Day crafts, which includes soap carving, bath salts, flower potting, brooch making and coloring Mother's Day cards.
Children will also want to check out the pony rides, fire truck from the East Brainerd station, inflatables, Rolling Video's van or Coastie the Coast Guard Auxiliary's mechanical talking tugboat.
