New York Times best-selling author Jeff Shaara will be in Chattanooga tonight, June 5, to talk about his latest release, "The Smoke at Dawn."

Completing a Civil War trilogy that began with "A Chain of Thunder" and "A Blaze of Glory," the new book examines the last great push of the Army of the Cumberland, setting the stage for a decisive confrontation at Chattanooga.

Shaara will give a free talk at 6 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Chattanooga Public Library, 1001 Broad St.

A VIP reception preceding the public program starts at 5 p.m. Proceeds from those $50 tickets go to Friends of the Library programs. The private reception includes hors d'oeuvres, wine and a copy of "The Smoke at Dawn."

VIP tickets may be purchased at jeffshaara.eventbrite.com. General-admission tickets may be secured at jeffshaarageneraladmission.eventbrite.com.

Free parking is available in the Republic Parking lot across from the library, and a children's story hour will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. on the second floor.

"The Final Storm," "No Less Than Victory," "The Steel Wave," "The Rising Tide," "To the Last Man," "The Glorious Cause," "Rise to Rebellion" and "Gone for Soldiers" are also among Shaara's notable works.

He may be best known for "Gods and Generals" and "The Last Full Measure," two novels that complete a Civil War trilogy that began with his father Michael Shaara's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, "The Killer Angels."

The 1993 feature film "Gettysburg" was based on "The Killer Angels." The motion picture "Gods and Generals," based on Jeff Shaara's first book, was released in 2003.
