Journals of Emma Bell Miles focus of program - June 5

Steven Cox will sign copies and read from his new book, "Once I Too Had Wings," at 6 p.m. today, June 5, at the Signal Mountain Library, 1114 James Blvd. The book contains edited selections from the journals of Emma Bell Miles, an author, poet, naturalist and artist who lived on Walden's Ridge in the early 20th century. Her writings and paintings reflect both her love for Appalachia and the hardship of life in the mountains. Miles kept detailed accounts of her daily life, and these journals, now residing at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, provide the material for Cox's book. Cox is head of special collections and archives at UTC's Lupton Library. Some of Miles' paintings, on loan from the Chattanooga History Center, are on display in the library's Reading Room.
