Louis Ross Golden Cairn Awards to recognize outdoors trailblazers - April 2

Outdoor athletes, enthusiasts and organizations honored

Reservations are requested by Wednesday, April 2, for the 2014 Louis Ross Golden Cairn Awards. The ceremony will be held 7-11 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at Waterhouse Pavilion, 805 Market St.

Hosted by Southeast Youth Corps, the event recognizes the efforts, accomplishments and contributions of local outdoor athletes, enthusiasts and organizations. Not only does the event highlight the impact of outdoor recreation but "those individuals who are responsible for the outdoor renaissance that has occurred in Chattanooga over the past several years," says spokesman Kevin Webster, an AmeriCorps VISTA (volunteer in service to America).

The Southeast Youth Corps, modeled after the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s, is designed to engage local youth in employment, education and recreation opportunities.

Awards will be divided into two categories:

¦ The Golden Cairn Club Award will be bestowed upon the local club or organization that has provided the outdoor recreation or sports community with the most generous gifts of time, skills or support over the past year.

¦ The Golden Cairn Outdoor Ambassador Awards will be presented to the individuals who best embody sportsmanship and/or community outreach within 10 genres: road biking, mountain biking, rock climbing, trail running, road running, swimming, paddling, standup paddleboarding, triathlon and hiking.

Nominations were collected from late February to mid-March. Final online voting continues through Tuesday, April 1, at www.southeastyc.org/goldencairnawards.
