A.B. McRee smooths out the bowl of a wooden spoon in preparation for Pioneer Days, an old-time skills demonstration set for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Poe's Tavern, 9835 Dayton Pike in Soddy-Daisy. The inaugural event will celebrate the history of the tavern, the area and the time when things were made by hand, says organizer Bud Ellis of Horsin' Around Carving School. Among the skills to see are carving, lathing, blacksmithing, wood spinning, quilting and lace tatting. A collection of antique blackpowder guns will be on display. Admission is free.
