Girls Inc. hosts 5K, golf tournament fundraisers

This week Girls Inc. of Chattanooga will host two first-ever fundraisers as part of its year-long 50th anniversary celebration.

"The focus of the 50th is not just the events, it's to get the word out to the community about the work that Girls Inc. has done to help girls ages 6 to 18 on their road to adulthood and to becoming economically stable college-bound girls," said Bea Lurie, president and CEO of Girls Inc. of Chattanooga.

The first event, The Girls Walk: Stepping Stones for the Future, is a 5K walk or run on the Riverwalk Saturday, May 21 from 8 a.m. until noon. Registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Chattanooga State Amphitheater followed by a warmup with representatives from the Sports Barn. The timed walk or run begins at 9 a.m.

A celebration for all participants will begin at 10:30 in the Chattanooga State Amphitheater featuring live music by DJ Jstar, refreshments, a performance by the Eastlake Academy of Fine Arts dance team and the Father Stroller Stride obstacle course for dads.

Prices for the walk are based on age, said Toccora Johnson, manager of elementary programs for Girls Inc. of Chattanooga and co-chair of the walk. For children under the age of 11 the event costs $10 per person, for ages 11-18 the cost is $25 per person and for adults 18 and up the event costs $30 per person.

The second event, The Girls Inc. Golf Open, is a golf tournament hosted by the Lookout Mountain Golf Club Tuesday, May 24, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Lunch and dinner are provided for participants. The tournament is also hosting a silent auction, which is open to the community from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Although there is limited space for teams, it's not too late to donate or sponsor a hole for $100, said Girls Inc. board member Mary Bach.

"When we were choosing which events we wanted to do, we tried to have several diverse events so they would appeal to different parts of Chattanooga," said Shannon Colbert, manager of development and communication for Girls Inc. of Chattanooga.

Registration and more information on both of these events and upcoming events is available at www.girlsincofchatt.org or by calling 624-4757.
