Holidays a tasty tradition at the Bread Basket

Bunnies are popping up at local bakery the Bread Basket this week.

The approaching Easter holiday means both a cuddly shaped cookie and a boost in sales for owner Anson Hyde.

"For the Easter holiday we make these sugar cookies in the shape of a bunny face and frost them," Hyde said. "They are just cute. They're probably our best-seller."

As Easter draws near and spring gatherings are held, people come to the Bread Basket as they host lunches or visit family or friends. Whether it's picking up one of the store's famous sourdough breads or grabbing a few dozen cookies, people want to provide some sweet hospitality for their visitors.

"A lot of people grab stuff we already have on hand," Hyde said. "We customize our treats to the holiday, so right now our thumbprint cookies are pastel, and we'll change with the season."

Of course as one would expect at this time of year, the Bread Basket also sees success with its Easter baskets, handled baskets filled with cookies, breads and muffins.

"We ship a lot of those out across the country," said Hyde. "They are pretty popular to send as gifts and to send out to family."

The holiday bump in business is welcome after a quiet January, he added. After the Christmas holiday many shy away from the treats as they begin their New Year's resolutions.

"Valentine's Day in February was really busy and it kind of kicks off this spending through March," Hyde said. "People give up their diets. But also, people are getting out more and having people over."

Providing a comfort food is sought after when hosting or attending a gathering, and that keeps the Bread Basket busy throughout spring, he said.

"This is like what grandma and ma used to make," said Hyde. "It makes people feel good and it's tasty and fun."

The Bread Basket on Signal Mountain and in East Brainerd is a local favorite after decades of selling baked goods at its two locations.

"It's a comfort that people want," Hyde said. "When you come home from college or you have someone visiting, they want that bread they remember or those cookies they used to like. The holidays really bring that out."
