Friends of Hixson will add a second piece of public art to the area and make repairs to the existing sculpture after it was damaged by the recent tornado.

Hixson artist Jack Denton's sculpture "North Chickamauga Portal" will accent the Greenway, and the previously placed "Arise" will be reinstalled after it was blown over and damaged during the recent tornado.

"It will be installed, lighted and landscaped," Friends of Hixson board member Marv Martin said of "Arise," which the group placed at the intersection of Hixson Pike and Access Road as its first-ever public art effort. "It will be lit 24 hours per day."

The new geometric sculpture by Denton must be approved by the Public Art Committee before a concrete location is selected. Hixson residents may have the option to vote on the sculpture.

"We wanted something to punctuate and define our area," Denton said. "It's 30 feet tall, so the same size as a three-story building."

Martin said the cost to lease the sculpture for two years is $1,000. To purchase it once the lease is up would cost $7,500.
