Sale Creek High School Lady Panthers volleyball team is celebrating a successful season.
"This is a record number of wins for us," head coach Debbie Hill said in regards to this season's record of 47-12. "We had over 20 wins in the past six years. This is the first time we've topped 30 wins. The last real successful year we had in volleyball was a region championship in 1963."
The team made it to the state tournament this year, where it won third place in Class A Oct. 26-28.
"We had a third place finish with a 2-2 record for the tournament," said Hill. "We beat Loretto and Grace Christian out of Knoxville. We lost to Friendship Christian and Summertown. We had a great year. We set goals to go to state and reached our goals. We had lots of improvement and great teamwork."
She credits the winning 2011 season to playing in all the big tournaments, practicing daily, attending a pre-season camp at Carson-Newman College and teamwork.
"I think the biggest thing we had going this year was teamwork," said Hill. "We really gelled as a team this year."
Although she credits every one of her 17-member team of six freshmen, three seniors, four juniors and four sophomores for stepping up to make this the best volleyball season ever at Sale Creek School, senior captains outside hitter Chelsi Roark, libero Megan Weatherford and rightside Baileigh Bailey helped lead the team. Juniors middle hitter/setter Erin Hill, middle hitter Krissy Hodge and sophomore setter/rightside Megan Storey all made big contributions this season as well, said Hill.
"I'm very excited the community has gotten behind us," she said. "It's been a big deal. The boys basketball team at Sale Creek went to state in the 1980s and that's the last time [until now that] an athletic team at Sale Creek went to state."
