Flat Stanley takes Apison students around the world

Kim Daniel's second-grade class at Apison Elementary School has traveled around the country and around the world via Flat Stanley, a paper character mailed into his adventures pen-pal style.

Students colored their own Flat Stanley and chose where to send him.

"It travels to the world," said Jed Norman, who mailed his to President Barack Obama, Santa and Taylor Swift.

"We're going to be really excited if Taylor Swift responds," Daniel said.

The class did receive a letter from the White House detailing Flat Stanley's involvement in Oval Office meetings and playing catch with Bo on the South Lawn during his visit.

Haynes Eller sent Flat Stanley to his cousin, a firefighter in Manhattan's Upper West Side. Photos returned of Flat Stanley meeting the fire station dog, sliding down the pole and barbecuing chicken with the other firefighters.

The class also learned about flowers used in Rose Parade floats and about Mexico and Germany. They'll continue receiving other students' Flat Stanleys through the end of the school year.

The Flat Stanley Project was begun by a Canadian teacher in 1995 and is based on a book from the 1950s. The project has been part of Daniel's curriculum for five years.

She said the project, taught alongside lessons about writing friendly letters, has been a wonderful way to teach children about their own community and about foreign places.
