Free health fair will bring world of options May 21

Health clearinghouse Nutrition World is offering an extensive overview of its wealth of goods and services in a free health fair Saturday, May 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"I think the ultimate goal is to be a one-stop opportunity to avail yourself of a huge variety of nutrition information, health information, free samples, free classes and screenings," said owner Ed Jones. "That's basically our concept: overall holistic wellness by empowering people to know what they need to do."

Pilates, yoga, tai chi, hoop dancing, acupuncture and qigong energy-balancing sessions will be ongoing throughout the day and are free to anyone who wishes to participate. In addition, there will be free chair massages, blood pressure and glucose evaluations, breast cancer assessments and sleep apnea, bone density and hip screenings. No pre-registration is necessary.

A nutrition expert, holistic skin care specialist and medical doctors will be on-hand to answer questions and advise people. Products ranging from organic meats to supplements will be offered as samples.

The day's comprehensive variety mirrors the store's day-to-day operations, which have expanded since its 1979 opening to include more products and services. Almost all of the day's activities are normally offered on-site.

"I think in the area of holistic health there simply has to be [a range of services] because everybody has different needs," said Jones. "We try to be able to connect with what each individual person may feel comfortable to choose in order to raise their level of health."

Jones often flies in specialists for special presentations and lectures.

This is the second health fair the store has hosted. Jones said it will likely become an annual event. The first one two years ago "was a huge overwhelming success." This year's promises to be even bigger and better, he said.

While some of the treatments offered may seem alternative, Jones said he hopes people will consider trying them.

"I'm here to look out for everything that goes on this entire wellness center, the products we have, the teachers we have, they all go through me," he said. "I'm pretty open-minded but I'm pretty particular because it all comes back to me."
