Lions holding contest for new Signal Mountain license plate design

The Signal Mountain Lions Club is accepting submissions for the Signal Mountain license plate design contest until Monday, June 27.

For more than 15 years, Signal Mountain residents have displayed a sense of pride in their community with the Signal Mountain license plate designed by Lion Irby Park. Adorned with dogwood blooms, the plate was sold for $5 until supplies were recently exhausted.

"People were still asking if they could have one, and enough people asked we thought we'd try to fulfill the interest in the community," said Signal Mountain Lion Mel Tryon. "We figured, 'If we're going to reorder, why don't we look at a new design?'"

Anyone is welcome to enter, and designs should feature subject matter representative of the mountain-top area.

A panel of judges will select finalists from the submitted designs, and Tryon said the winning design will be chosen by public vote at the Lions' annual Fourth of July picnic. The winner will be announced and the new design unveiled at the Lions' Labor Day barbecue.

Along with a $100 gift certificate from the Mountain Business Association redeemable at any member business, the winner also receives a lasting legacy in the community and the bragging rights of having their design displayed all over town.

Entries should be the size of a standard license plate submitted on cardstock or heavier paper, with name and contact information of the contestant written on back. The design's background must be white and should contain no more than three additional colors.

Entries are accepted at MACC, Signal Mountain Library or Bachman Community Center.

Tryon said funds raised through the plates go to support the Lions' regular activities in the community. He said the cost of the new plates will depend on the complexity of the design, but the charge will continue to be minimal.
