Signal Mountain's Girl Scout Troop 40892 recently earned its Bronze Award, the highest honor Scouts can achieve at the junior level, according to troop leader Kathy Jordan.

To acquire a Bronze Award, she said troop members are required to put in 15 service hours to complete a group project. The girls chose to spruce up the Girl Scout meeting room at Bachman Community Center.

"We talked about several different things that would help the community," said Jordan. "There are a lot of troops who meet there, and it's nice to know we have a room that's functional for the amount of girls that we have."

Troop members painted the walls, molding and chalkboards, cleaned the blinds and sorted through bins of donated items, which Jordan said consumed a large portion of the girls' time. She said their favorite part was painting stars on the room's already existing mural.

"There are no more dusty couches or icky carpets," she said.

The O-Ten-Talla service unit paid for the floors to be redone and also purchased new tables and chairs for the room, she said.

The troop currently meets at Nolan, but will be making use of the refurbished room at Bachman starting next year after the girls "bridge" to the Cadette level this spring.
