Walden's Ridge Guild introduces Little Brown Church ornament

Members of the Walden's Ridge Guild are now selling the group's 2012 Christmas ornament, which features The Little Brown Church in the Wildwood.

This is the Guild's third collectible ornament, which members sell for $15 each to raise funds to further the group's mission of promoting the welfare of the community and supporting local organizations such as Waldens Ridge Emergency Services, Bachman Community Center and McCoy Park and Arboretum.

Ornaments from the past two years are still available as well, including the 2010 edition picturing the W Road and the 2011 edition featuring the Mountain Arts Community Center/Signal Mountain Grammar School.

"They're all historical," said Lavonne Jolley, who selected the Little Brown Church for this year's ornament.

Since 1908, non-denominational services have been held at the church for mountain residents from Memorial Day to Labor Day, said Jolley. At the time it was built in 1907, the nearest church down the mountain was four hours away by horse and buggy, she said, adding that the church was painted brown because it was the cheapest paint color available.

Guild member Susan Jensen said the ornaments make great gifts, especially for the many brides who have been married at the church.

"It's something you can display year-round, because it doesn't have a reindeer or Santa Claus," said Guild member Betsy Nichols. "I have mine in my dining room."

Ornaments are available through any Guild member, at Walden Town Hall or by contacting Susan Jensen at 886-2889 or Rorie Fore at 987-9227.
