Bachman Community Center's annual Home and Garden Show returns Saturday, April 29 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A longtime tradition at Bachman, the event showcases plants and unique items from local vendors.

"It's a great opportunity for people to buy some native plants for their yards and improve their curb appeal," said Katy Murphy, marketing and programs manager for Bachman Community Center.

New this year is a talk by local historian and author the Rev. James Douthat, who will speak on the history of Walden's Ridge in the Bachman auditorium beginning at 10:30 a.m. The free program will focus on the ridge's early settlements, including details about schools, prominent families and local landmarks. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions and pick Douthat's brain about the community's fascinating past, Murphy said.

"He was involved in the founding [of Bachman Community Center] nearly 20 years ago, and it's really exciting to have him back," she said.

The Signal Mountain Lions Club will be firing up the grill to sell hamburgers and hot dogs starting at 11 a.m.

The event will again offer activities for children, with the addition this year of brain-training activities for both kids and adults courtesy of LearningRx.

Murphy said many of the vendors, including numerous plant and landscaping businesses, have been coming for years, but there will be several newcomers as well. Among them is Down to Earth, offering a variety of items including medicinal herbs, native plants, cooking seasonings and teas. Nonprofit organization Wild Winds will be on-hand with information for attendees on native plants and natural landscaping, she added.

Local clubs and organizations will also be at the event, including the Walden's Ridge Guild, which will be selling hand-drawn maps of Signal Mountain and Christmas ornaments featuring well-known landmarks from the community, said Murphy.

The Bachman Bargains resale shop will be open during the Home and Garden Show, with lots of new items for sale, including new gardening and landscaping books donated by an online distributor.
