Just in time for the holidays, Signal Mountain resident Sarah Campbell is opening Culture and Couture, a gallery offering works by local artists and artisans.

Located in Signal Plaza a few doors down from Threads, the store is holding a grand opening celebration Saturday, Nov. 18 from noon to 3 p.m. with refreshments and opportunities to meet artists whose work is featured in the gallery.

"I want to connect people with local artists and help them to know the stories behind their work," said Campbell, who has a background in art.

She previously opened a gallery, Room with a View, in Sewanee as a gap-year project, and locals may remember her pop-up gallery at Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club several years ago.

"I've met so many people with so much talent here locally," said Campbell, as to what led her to open another gallery. "I think it will be really fun, and I've got a good lineup of vendors."

The gallery features works from local artists such as Caleb Goggans and Jim Tucker, as well as locally made items including jewelry, leather wallets, designer Kerri Jamison's handmade couture dresses with a vintage feel, and handcrafted coffee tables made from whiskey barrels.

"It's a good opportunity to support your local artists," Campbell said. "A lot of things [featured in the gallery] are inspired by the area."

Campbell said she's committed to operating the gallery in this location for a year, and may decide to stay longer once she sees how the business fares. While the store is mainly an art gallery right now, she said she plans to add more luxury home decor items in the future.

The store will at first be open only Fridays and Saturdays and by appointment, though Campbell said she plans to extend the hours soon.
