Chickamauga City Board of Education will hold its third and final fiscal year 2017 budget meeting July 28. All citizens are invited to attend the 4:45 p.m. meeting and board meeting immediately after to approve the chosen budget.

"We anticipate $10,436,800 in revenues for the school year for our general fund," said Chickamauga City Schools Finance Director Diane Miller. "We will end up with $657,632 in the bank to start the school year totaling the revenue up to $11,094,432. Total expenditures expected are $10,818,770."

And, Georgia's austerity reductions for schools are decreasing, according to Miller.

"For Fiscal Year 2017, the austerity reduction has decreased by $268,978," said Miller, explaining that the FY2017 budget has $268,978 more in funding due to this. "The state only withheld $142,041 for austerity for the coming school year. For 2016 the state withheld $411,019 for austerity."

According to Miller, the total expenditures from 2016 to 2017 went up by $42,304.

"Eighty-five percent of our budgeted expenses are payroll related," said Miller. "Instruction or payroll equals $7,100,867 for 2017. [The] instruction [budget] has increased by about $500,000 from 2016 to 2017. The increase will help with classroom supplies and equipment. We added one new position at the high school - an English teacher. We have about 85 employees on staff at Chickamauga City School System."

According to Miller, maintenance and operations for fiscal year 2017 is projected to be $1,109,465, an increase of $77,135 from 2016.

"Utilities is a large part of maintenance," said Miller. "You have to budget and be prepared for a roof leak and things like that."

According to Miller, Chickamauga City School System capital has increased with the anticipation of the Gordon Lee Memorial High School new main building construction. The construction is slated to begin in August.

"The fiscal year 2017 capital projects fund includes $3,500,000, compared to capital projects for 2016, which were $214,230," said Miller.

According to Miller, very little, if any, of the general fund will go toward financing the new school building.

"The school [new main building for Gordon Lee High School] will be built with funding from the state of Georgia," said Miller. "And none of that is reflected in the 2017 budget. The school system will pay the bills and the state will reimburse the school system during the school construction process. Our budget stays consistent from year to year. We are not a large school system. We are good stewards of the funds given. Since we are a small school system, we get less funding than most school systems in Georgia."

This year, students will return to school Aug. 24 - later than usual - due to construction.
