For the third consecutive year, the veterans at Fort Villanow will again empower local kids by teaching the skills needed to save a life and survive in the wild.

Parents are invited to bring their young ones out for the organization's annual Kids Survival Boot Camp, which will be held every Saturday in May from 10 a.m – 1 p.m.

Retired US Army Special Forces personnel will teach day campers skills like primitive land navigation, first aid, self defense and compass navigation, and one father saw just how useful that training could be when his seven-year-old stopped him from grabbing poison ivy.

"The camp is a great thing and more parents should bring their kids," the Chattanooga parent told event organizers.

In addition to survival, children will also have a chance to test their mettle on a fun military obstacle course and participate in outdoor activities like camping, fishing, and rock climbing.

The camp is recommended for children ages 8-15, and those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration is currently open and will end April 30. Call 706-397-8860 or visit Fort Villanow to enroll.
