The power of storytelling has united people since the beginning of time. Drawing on some of the works and words of local authors, the Friends of Collegedale Public Library hopes to join the community together through the library's annual speaker series.

Friends group member Emily McDonald, who heads the author selection process, said the speaker series is a great way to attract people to the library.

"It also promotes reading, which is something we're always trying to do," she added.

One of this year's speakers is David Carroll, anchor at WRCB and author of two books. His most recent book, "Volunteer Bama Dawg," is a collection of short stories from growing up in the South to experiences in television.

"They are humorous stories intended to amuse people," he said.

Carroll said he always has fun meeting new people, and is excited to be a speaker this year.

"Writing a book is so rewarding," said Carroll. "I would recommend it to anyone who likes telling stories."

Aside from the speaker series, the Friends group is focusing on its current fundraiser: the sale of personalized paving bricks to be placed outside the library's entrance, around the flagpole.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward the many resources the Friends provide for the library, including the well-known Rosetta Stone language learning software, and Tennessee READS, which provides digital e-books, audiobooks and videos to public libraries in Tennessee.

Each brick costs $25; cash, check or credit cards accepted. Order forms are available at the library. Personalization on each brick can be three lines maximum with 15 characters per line.
