Occupying the former ShopRite location in Ringgold, United Grocery Outlet welcomed customers to its unique shopping experience at the grand opening for its new 16,000-square-foot store Oct. 4. The closeout grocer buys shipments of quality food, produce and meat that manufacturers may have overbought or discontinued, then sells those products to customers at a comparatively low cost.

"If you shop with us, you're going to save money, and every shopping trip is going to be a little different," said store support manager Kim Gossett.

While UGO stocks name brands and carries "almost anything found in a supermarket," its inventory fluctuates based on what's available, with the primary goal of offering customers the best bargains. Trial runs, closeouts or packaging design changes are examples of why UGO is able to buy items at basement prices from brands including Campbell's, General Mills, Kellogg's, Kraft Foods, Land O' Lakes, Mars, Nestle, Quaker and Sara Lee.

"Nobody that shops us on a regular basis goes in there just to get milk and bread. They're going to get something else to go along with that," Gossett said, referencing the large inventory of everyday items. UGO even offers a full-service produce department, and a meat department which she compares to an "old school" meat market that offers good personal service with the meat cutters.

"What makes us different is we truly are a grocery outlet, not a discount store, and our goal every day is to provide our customers with an exciting, extreme-value shopping experience, and we do that by the unique way we are able to buy products," Gossett said.

The United Grocery Outlet in Ringgold is the latest of 37 stores of the corporate charter Bargain Barn Inc., which also develops stores under the name of GO Grocery Outlet. Bargain Barn is the largest closeout grocery outlet in the eastern U.S.
