“So, how does it look?” asked Jim Richards, co-owner of the local Five Guys locations, upon my arrival to the Hixson restaurant.
As I scanned the spacious interior and breathed in the salty scent of hot fries, three adjectives came to mind: clean, fresh and open. Those adjectives describe not only Five Guys’ kitchen but also the Hixson store’s remodeled space.
In mid-August, Hixson’s Five Guys celebrated its 10-year anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, Jim closed down the restaurant for two weeks for a complete remodel, which is custom for the chain, he told me. Every Five Guys gets a complete renovation — from the ground to the ceiling — each decade.
Five Guys’ face-lift features new tile, new tables and chairs made of real wood, and new energy-efficient pendant lights. The dining area also now showcases two Coca-Cola Freestyle machines, which offer more than 110 soda flavors, fruit juices and flavored waters. Moreover, the bathrooms were fitted with new stainless steel fixtures.
“Some of the things we did, customers would never even know about,” Jim said.
For example, all the kitchen equipment was revamped, and a new kitchen sink with high-speed water jets was installed in order to better power wash all of Five Guys’ potatoes — a big time-saver for Five Guys’ staff, who must hand-wash and hand-cut between 200 and 400 pounds of potatoes every day.
But while the inside of Hixson’s Five Guys may be flashy and new, rest assured, Jim said, “Our menu is staying the same.”
And be sure to stay tuned. The Five Guys at Hamilton Place also turns 10 this year. That location will temporarily shut down Sept. 25 to undergo similar renovations.
