The first time I visited The Chef and his Wife was in 2014. Back then, the business was principally a home-delivery meal service, operating out of a church basement alongside Bonny Oaks Drive.

From the start, I was charmed by the homey, familiar feeling of both the space and the recipes - two of the reasons why I have continued to love The Chef and his Wife over the years. But following my most recent visit, I have a new reason. We'll get to that later.

Last March, The Chef and his Wife relocated to Hixson and expanded its offerings. Though its foundation remains fresh-made meal deliveries and pickups, the restaurant now boasts more options than ever.

Just inside its front door, there is a wood-trimmed room lined with large coolers. The front of the store boasts fresh, ready-to-heat entrées. In the back of the store you'll find frozen entrées, sold in microwave-safe containers with heating instructions.

"People come in and pick up something fresh for tonight, then head to the frozen section to stock up for the week," said owner and Executive Chef Timothy Mulderink.

Each week, Chef Tim and his crew prepare 18 rotating entrées, which may include dishes such as cranberry-apple-stuffed chicken, Salisbury steak, and sweet and sour meatballs. Then, the menu is posted online at thechefandwife.com, listing recipes available for store pickup - fresh or frozen - or for home delivery.

In the store, in addition to the entrées, the coolers boast fare such as pimiento cheese spreads, chicken salad, soups, salad dressings, whole pies, Ben and Jerry's ice cream pints and take-n-bake pizzas. Most recently, The Chef and his Wife added a gluten-free cooler with select entrées, desserts and pizzas, which brings me to my latest reason to love The Chef and his Wife - the Alfredo chicken gluten-free pizza: rich and buttery with a crisp, cracker-like rice flour crust.

Eventually, Chef Tim said he would like to add more individually sized desserts to the cooler section, as well as hot soup to go. But for now, the restaurant's hot soup is featured as part of its self-serve hot lunch bar deal, which includes two different entrées, salad, soup and drink, all for under $10. The cuisine on the bar includes Southern classics such as meatloaf, lasagna, Salisbury steak, oven-fried chicken, potpie and baked ziti with meatballs.

Indeed, the reasons to love The Chef and his Wife just keep multiplying.
