Chattanooga loves its hibachi: the sizzle of the hot griddle; the flash of flames; the piping-hot plates of veggies, noodles and meat. But Soho Hibachi is proof that, in fact, people love the fresh fare more than all the fanfare involved in its preparation.

Offering an alternative to expensive Japanese steakhouses, Soho forgoes the traditional hibachi show while still providing the same expertly-crafted dishes - but in the half the time and for half the price. Not to mention, its portion sizes are enormous.

The Tennessee Valley has happily responded by voting Soho "Best of the Best" in the Times Free Press' annual local business awards year after year. This year, its Fort Oglethorpe location was voted Best Japanese Restaurant, and was a finalist for Best Carryout and Best Meal for the Money.

In addition to its hibachi, Soho's menu also features a lengthy list of teriyaki options. One of my favorites is the teriyaki tofu, tossed in a tangy golden sauce and served on a bed of freshly grilled vegetables.

All Soho's hibachi and teriyaki meals come with customer's choice of white, fried or brown rice or lo mein noodles.

For an appetizer, I'd recommend the gyoza, which are traditional Japanese pork and vegetable dumplings, served warm with a side of light and savory dipping sauce. While you won't witness that pomp of preparation, rest assured - Soho's plates are award-winning.
