Now Serving Nostalgia

Through one of my stories this week, I was introduced to the Monte Cristo — a fried sammy made with turkey, ham and cheese which is traditionally served with a side of dipping jelly.

Apparently I am the last to learn about this classic dish, which originated in France and then burst onto the States’ scene in the 1960s. Over the decades, the Monte Cristo’s popularity has been steadfast.

That got me thinking about food trends. What makes a recipe stand the test of time, or fall from favor?

I don’t have the answer — but I do have a list of some foods that, according to thekitchn.com, once defined a decade. Hungry for nostalgia, anyone?

1960s: Desserts and salads encased in gelatin

1970s: Quiche

1980s: Sloppy Joes

1990s: Pizza bagels

2000s: Sliders

2010s: What do you think will define this decade?
