Sixty years ago, it was a family pharmacy. After that, it was a history museum.
But neither knew how to party like 1885 Grill.
As the current tenant of the historic white stone building in the heart of St. Elmo, 1885 first opened its doors five years ago. Since then, the restaurant has become a neighborhood fixture known for its Southern-inspired cuisine and family-friendly festivities.
On Monday, June 4 1885 will blend both of these features into a backyard barbecue party celebrating its half-decade in the Scenic City.
“We’re gonna wheel the grill out onto the patio and do $5 barbecue plates,” said 1885 partner and manager Miguel de Jesus. “You’ll get chicken, potato salad and baked beans. The theme is ‘five.’”
In addition to barbecue plates, 1885 T-shirts will be on sale for $5. The restaurant will offer each of its signature cocktails and appetizers for $5 — including best-selling libations such as the “cucumber cooler,” “Scenic City storm” and blueberry mojito, as well as small plates like the crabcakes and seared scallops.
“We typically don’t include those because of cost,” said Miguel.
Beginning at 6 p.m., 1885 will host a cornhole competition. At 8 p.m., it will hold a live raffle. Throughout the evening, there will be face-painting, swag giveaways and more.
It’ll be quite the event — one to last the ages.
