Company: Tennessee American Water Company, which was adopted as the utility's name in 1973 after previously being known as the City Water Company of Chattanooga

Owner: American Water Works Co.

Founded: Started in 1856 as the Chattanooga Water Corp., the company was sold to American Water Works in 1887.

Distinctions: Tennessee American Water is the biggest privately owned water utility in Tennessee. In 1892, the water utility helped Chattanooga become only the second city in the South to have filtered water.

Customers: Tennessee American supplies water to about 390,000 persons in the Chattanooga area.
