Founded: Incorporated in 1949, Fort Oglethorpe is Georgia's newest city. It was created on the site of a former U.S. Army post. Fort Oglethorpe is named after James Edward Oglethorpe, Georgia's founder.
Government: Lynn Long is mayor. City Council members are Craig Crawford, Earl Gray, Paula Stinnett and Johnnie "Red" Smith. One council seat is vacant.

Attraction: Fort Oglethorpe is the home of the 6th Cavalry Museum and preserves the rich military history of the "Fighting Sixth," which was stationed at The Post at Fort Oglethorpe from 1919 to 1942. Visited by presidents, military heroes and celebrities, the museum houses artifacts, uniforms, weapons, accoutrements, photos and military vehicles.
Historical note: Cloud Springs field hospital cared for at least 1,000 Union soldiers during the first day of fighting at the Battle of Chickamauga on Sept. 19, 1863. Cloud Spring's water still flows from a concrete pipe into a basin at the parking lot of Joy Carpets Inc. at LaFayette Road and White Street.
Famous landmark: Old LaFayette Road, just to the west of U.S. Highway 27 and north of White Street, was the route soldiers took to the Chickamauga Battlefield. A number of historical markers line the old road.
