Catoosa County raises building permit fees

RINGGOLD, Ga. - The rising cost of doing business has driven up the cost of building permits in Catoosa County.

County commissioners approved a plan to increase fees for residential and commercial building trade permits on a graduated scale, as recommended by zoning administrator Donald "Buster" Brown.

"It's going from $25 to $45 for the first year for residential," Mr. Brown said, then to $65 and $85 in 2010 and 2011.

"Commercial is set by a percentage," he said. The fee of 0.003 percent of the estimated value of the project was raised to 0.004 percent and will climb each of the next two years, too.

The fee for a commercial project estimated at $200,000 was $60, and at 0.004 percent is now $80, Commission Chairman Keith Greene said.

"It brings us in line with other counties," Mr. Greene said. "And, it will help the county."

Mr. Brown said an informal survey showed that permit fees in other counties ranged from $75 to $110.

"What we were charging wasn't really covering the costs of inspections," Mr. Brown said. "It's something that was long overdue."
