Police brace for weekend marches in downtown Atlanta

Watch out for potential road closures and pedestrian traffic related to planned marches in downtown Atlanta this weekend.

While police say they have no plans to close roads yet, demonstrators are expected Friday and Saturday.

The Atlanta Police Department will direct traffic throughout the planned march routes to maintain the safety of the participants, police spokesman Officer Donald Hannah said.

Students from local colleges and universities plan to protest Friday in opposition to the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States. Protesters will converge on Centennial Park at 10:30 a.m. and march throughout the downtown area. The group calls itself We The People.

Similarly, thousands are expected to march from the Center for Civil and Human Rights to the state capitol Saturday.

The "march for social justice and women" is expected to begin at 1 p.m. The exact route is available here.

On Sunday, the Atlanta Falcons play the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game at the Georgia Dome at 3 p.m. No road closures are planned, but traffic is expected to be heavy.
