Head Strong

The Tour de France may be over, but cyclists know that head safety is a year-round priority. "Anyone shopping for a helmet should focus on two things - fit and comfort," says Justin Black of Owen Cyclery.

Casual riders can find a good-quality helmet for about $45 to $65, Black says, but competitive cyclists can face a confusing array of features, materials and prices. Here are some of our current favorites:

YAKKAY Smart Two

Best for: Taking a fashion risk while playing it safe. But wait - there's more: The EPS shell and air vents keep you cool and protected during your commute. Wear it solo or dress it up with a selection of covers, from fedoras to faux furs. $87; covers not included

Trek Bontrager Quantum

Best for: Literally anywhere your wheels take you, whether you're dodging traffic or roots. But wait - there's more: A removable visor, great ventilation and five colors to choose from? For this quality, you can't beat the price. $65

Catlike Whisper Plus 2013

Best for: Leaving the others in the dust on race day. But wait - there's more: The plethora of air vents may look goofy at first glance, but the channels divide the energy from a hit, making them some of the best crash-absorbing technology out there. $220

Giro Advantage 2

Best for: Being crowned king of the time trials. But wait - there's more: Its Roc Loc 5 fit system lets you adjust a dial to change the helmet's position and tightness mid-ride with one hand, and the wind tunnel-tested ventilation is out of this world. $165

Cannondale Ryker

Best for: Feeling secure on your gritty off-road adventures. But wait - there's more: An alloy roll cage embedded in the foam liner provides strength and structure as light as a feather, and details in the inner shape mean that it'll have a snug, comfortable fit on nearly any noggin. $85
