Winter Runderland

Even though the treadmill can provide a safe haven from the winter weather, many runners feel that the machines just don't cut it in comparison to pounding the pavement. Keep your outdoor routine in spite of whatever Old Man Winter throws at you with these cold-weather gear items.

Patagonia Capilene 1 Silkweight Stretch Crew

When it comes to the cold, sweat-wicking material is a runner's best friend. This quick-dry, wicking long-sleeved crew features 50+ UPF sun protection and Gladiodor Garment Odor Control to keep you fresh - and your running partner happy - no matter where your feet take you. $35

Lucy Women's Brave The Cold Cap

Keeping your head warm will permit your body to put its energy into warming your extremities, allowing you to wear fewer layers. Choose a fast-wicking beanie like the Brave the Cold Cap, which features jersey fabric for added warmth - plus a ponytail opening for convenience. $25

Manzella Cascade Convertible

The heavyweight fleece Manzella Cascade Convertible has a fold-over mitten covering to give you the warmth of mittens with the functionality (i.e. iPhone-tapping capability) of fingerless gloves. $25

Marmot Power Stretch Pant

One layer is usually enough for legs in the winter, but go for a breathable tight stretch pant like the Power Stretch Pant by Marmot to keep in the heat while allowing freedom of movement. If the fit concerns you, look for a pair of relaxed fit tights or throw on a pair of loose shorts on top. Bonus - these pants come with a credit card pocket just in case you need funds on the go. $84.95

THE BIG CHILL

Put your winter gear to the test at the 5th annual Chilly Dawg 5K fun run/walk Jan. 26 at Sandy Creek Park in Athens, Ga.

The race is part of the 2013 Black Bag Racing Series and the Run and See Georgia Grand Prix Series. Awards will be presented to Overall M/F, Masters M/F and the top three M/F in age groups beginning at 10 and under through 75 and over.

WARM UP RIGHT!

It's important to take extra precautions when running during the winter months because muscles can get cold and stiff. Be sure to stretch thoroughly and briskly walk for at least five minutes before your run to give your muscles a chance to warm up, reducing the likelihood of strains or tears.
