Guided Climb

Chatt Steel: A Comprehensive Guide to Chattanooga Sport Climbing will hit the shelves of retailers in late August or early September, says local co-author and co-publisher Cody Averbeck. He and Micah Gentry have been working on the project for the past two years and planning it even longer. "We've been thinking about it for five or six years. A lot of people for a long time felt there was somewhat of a missing resource for Chattanooga climbing," says Averbeck. "We're big fans of guidebooks. The best guidebooks are authentic-they have authentic insight and experience-and are authored and published by locals."

The book contains information on 80 percent of Chattanooga's sport climbing routes in a 50-mile radius around the city, including logistics, first-hand route descriptions, consensus reviews and more. "The book is telling a story. Instead of making an app, I'd rather do a paper book because it gives you the ability to go in depth," Averbeck explains. "You'll see we have a multimedia focus. Over the years I've collected all these interviews with local climbers, so you've got this really authentic insight to the stories these people are telling."

The book will go hand in hand with the recorded interviews and other candid videos and photos of locals climbing in the area, says Averbeck. Chatt Steel is only the first installment in a series, which will include a guidebook on local trad climbing.
