Romance, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Fortunately, the region offers more than enough opportunities for both, regardless of preference. A charming date need not be overpriced, either. Love can bloom on a simple hike or leisurely drive.

Drive the Cherohala Skyway

• Tellico Plains, Tenn. (225 Cherohala Skyway -- Visitor Center)

On a beautiful day, take a drive with someone special along the Cherohala Skyway, which connects Tellico Plains, Tenn., and Robbinsville, N.C. Crossing through both the Cherokee and Nantahala national forests, the Cherohala offers gorgeous views at as high as 5,400 feet above sea level. The Cherohala has been named a National Scenic Byway.

Tour a winery

• Wolf Mountain Vineyards, 180 Wolf Mountain Trail, Dahlonega, Ga.

At Wolf Mountain Vineyards in Dahlonega, Ga., couples can stroll through the vineyards while learning about grape growth and wine production. The winery also offers tastings and sells bottles of its wine. Or stay and dine at the Vineyard Cafe, where each dish is carefully paired with a house-made wine. Sunday brunch is also available, with menus built around monthly themes.

Tie the knot

• Mentone Wedding Chapel, Mentone, Ala.

Those looking for a quaint wedding setting might want to consider the rustic Mentone Wedding Chapel atop Lookout Mountain in Mentone, Ala. The chapel, featuring a cedar shake roof, is a replica of early Appalachian churches, according to the chapel's website. The forest-like setting offers an escape from the every day.
