Athens: More than ice cream on offer

August marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Athens, the peak of conflict between the local political power structure and returning G.I.s from World War II, when deputies holed up in the jail and military veterans rained fire on them from a high vantage point on the campus of what today is Tennessee Wesleyan University in McMinn County, Tenn. Moo, moo, moo-ve on over to Athens, Tenn., this summer and visit the famed Mayfield Dairy, where workers make ice cream, milk and dairy products that are shipped across the United States.

But don't stop with just an ice cream cone. Tucked about 60 miles north of Chattanooga, the small town of Athens has much more to offer, with activities ranging from hiking to concerts to markets.

And with the Living Heritage Museum, visitors can all but take a trip back in time to explore American history firsthand.
