Cleveland goes green with cleanup, events today

CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- It will be a green Saturday here today.

Environmentally friendly events include fishing trash from Mouse Creek along the greenway, safely disposing of household hazardous wastes and an environmental fair at Cleveland State Community College.

Hundreds of people from Bradley and surrounding counties typically line up for the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. They bring old paint, cleaning fluids, automotive fluids, aerosol cans and other hard-to-dispose-of items.

The event is being held at Tri-State Exhibition Center and is sponsored by Santek Environmental.

Cheryl Dunson, marketing vice president, said volunteers will help unload and dispose of the products.

"Logistically, Tri-State allows us to quickly move vehicles in and out of the facility without long waits or delays," she said.

Wastes should be transported in tight-fitting containers, and original containers are preferred. No unknown items will be accepted, nor will medical waste, explosives, ammunition, commercial or agri-business waste.

Santek and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Bradley County government and Cleveland/Bradley Keep America Beautiful organize the event.

Later today, "It'$ All About The Green" is a fair at Cleveland State that celebrates environmental awareness.

"The purpose is to show how you can go green and still save money; hence the dollar sign in the name," said Beirne Beaty, executive director of the Cleveland State Foundation.

Those attending will get a reusable shopping bag, a free tree seedling, T-shirts and other door prizes, she said.

The second annual event includes food, presentations, a plant exchange and vendor exhibits. Entertainment includes the CSCC Jazz Ensemble, the middle school show choir High Energy, CSCC Vocal Rhapsody and the Charleston Elementary Club Choir. Other children's activities will be available.

Joanne Maskew, executive director of Keep America Beautiful, said these and other activities are part of the local group's participation in the annual Great American Cleanup.
