Wellness is a process, not a procedure, for the staff and technicians at Natural Body Spa and Shop. The local full-service day spa offers all things natural and organic at two locations, Riverview and Downtown Chattanooga, to clients looking to be pampered with pure, organic products.

The local Natural Body began in 1997 when owner Kelly Brock suffered from back pain following the birth of her third child.

After bed rest and medication, she tried massage. "The pain went away immediately," she said.

"When I realized the body's ability to heal itself, I started learning, researching and then opened my business here."

At the time there was no full-service spa and store in the area, according to Brock. Seeing the market and the need, she began her business - which is celebrating its 16th anniversary March 17 this year.

A quality level of customer service and the quest to use only "clean" and organic products and services continue to help Natural Body live up to its name.

"We find and use natural, organic alternatives that deliver dramatic results," explained Spa Director Tiffany Ashley. "We work to bring the cleanest, purest products possible to our clients."

Brock added that they also do not use or sell products if the ingredients do not meet their green standards or are harmful or wasteful in any way. Even clothing sold in the spa's retail store is either primarily made from bamboo or organic cotton; Ashley describes it as "sustainable lifestyle wear."

On the customer service side, Natural Body offers true service types -"In other words, a 60-minute massage is 60 minutes" - said Ashley. "We pride ourselves in giving the full amount of time to our clients," she added.

Natural Body also strives to maintain a family environment. Staff members greet clients by name when they come in. Ashley added that the staff knows everything about their clients, and they interact on a personal level to make sure clients feel comfortable, welcome and at home.

A high level of education is also a key element for Natural Body. Out of 24 therapists, 14 have 10 years of experience in their fi eld, and within that, some have 20 years or more in their field. The spa is home to aestheticians, massage therapists, nail technicians and a highly knowledgeable retail staff that Brock and Ashley both said are as well educated in the services and products as the technicians.

"We also educate our clients not only in skincare and techniques, but in their lifestyles and how changes in it will benefi t them," Ashley added. Services at Natural Body range from typical massage therapy and organic facial peels to more eclectic offerings such as hot stone massage, refl exology and ear candling. Facials are also a popular service offered that provide clients with relaxation in addition to addressing clients' antiaging concerns by using unique Hungarian facial massage techniques and handmade organic skincare.

During a facial at Natural Body the esthetician will cleanse, tone and steam the skin, as well as extract any impurities. Then the esthetician tailors the skincare choices to meet each client's individual needs. While the skin is rejuvenating, the client will enjoy a stress-relieving massage of hands, shoulders, scalp and décolleté.

The average rate for a facial is $80 for 60 minutes. Other options available include 30-minute mini facials, organic peels and microdermabrasion.
