LISTEN: Elvis Costello and the Attractions: "Live at Hollywood High" (CD)

Recorded in the gymnasium of the famed Hollywood High School in L.A. in June 1978, this is Elvis Costello and the Attractions on fire amid a feverish creative stride. The opening performance of "Accidents Will Happen" proves that he could rock out like a street-wise tough on "Pump It Up," but was an emerging crooner in the classic style, an equal admirer of Smokey Robinson and George Jones. It's a preview of the epileptic vibrato employ on future balladry -- like Katherine Hepburn being strangled by a feral cat (in a good way). Few bands ever played and wrote as well as the boys on display on this indispensable recording. -- Steve Leftridge

READ: "Shades of Grey," by Jasper Fforde

Love, betrayal, life, death, a retro-futuristic society trussed up by its own Rules like tortured turkeys, Fforde's new novel seemingly has it all. The author has elected to divvy up the visible color spectrum and dole out drips of color to the members of the Collective as an indication of the hierarchy of castes. Mixing the outlandish remains of former civilizations with frighteningly plausible behavior, Fforde has created a brave new world with a peculiar logic of its own. -- Lara Killian
