Brainerd Baptist hoping to host up to 5,000 at Convention Center celebration

Dr. Robby Gallaty, senior pastor of Brainerd Baptist Church, said he isn't trying to proselytize but to unite.

With 5,000 seats available at the Chattanooga Convention Center, he'll have lots of room.

Brainerd Baptist will host the third annual Chattanooga Christmas Eve Celebration at 5 p.m. Saturday at the downtown venue.

"We have five services on Sunday at three venues," Gallaty said, "so, one, it's important for the church to come together. Second, we wanted to do something to really unite the community."

The event, celebrating the birth of Christ, has averaged 2,100 people its first two years.

Gallaty said he hopes people without a church home as well as people with a church home but no Christmas Eve service will attend.

Two years ago, he said, a woman named Linda Brown came to the service. Today, she is both a church member and was hired as his administrative assistant.

"We want people to come as they are, to start a new family tradition," Gallaty said. "We think there will be multiple people who go to other churches who will come to this.

His message in the casual, one-hour service will be "The Gift of Grace."

"This is the highlight of the year for me," Gallaty said. "I look forward to these services. I'm looking forward to meeting some new people."

Hot chocolate, apple cider and other snacks will be available for guests, and other treats will be given to children. In addition, each guest will receive a gift bag.

Musicians will be stationed throughout the convention center for the entertainment of guests.

Free parking is available in the center's parking garage.
