Off the Couch: Avetts highlight the week

December 26th, 2011 by Barry Courter and Lisa Denton in Life Entertainment

BARRY COURTER: Lisa, hopefully you are sitting at home resting up after a busy day opening all of your gifts. However, there is plenty to look forward to this week in local entertainment, including one concert that we are both very excited about. Apparently, we aren't the only ones looking forward to seeing The Avett Brothers Friday night at Track 29.

LISA DENTON: Barry, my my my heart like a kickdrum -- to borrow a lyric from this North Carolina band. Ticket sales were a blink-and-you'll-miss-it occasion. What was it -- 27 seconds to sell out? How is that even possible?

BARRY: I know I stood in line for several minutes to get mine. I think it's kind of like how Santa is able to deliver every present around the world in the blink of an eye. Actually, I think it's a computer thing, but no matter, 1,700 lucky folks will be there to hear "Kick Drum Heart," one of my ringtones by the way, and their other songs. I got to see them at Bonarroo sitting in a field when it was about 180 degrees, so this should be good.

LISA: I'll try not to embarrass you with my dancing. The other cool show at Track 29 this week is the New Year's Eve party with the Dirty Guv'nahs. They're based in Knoxville, but a couple of the members have relatives from this area, so they always draw a good crowd when they swing through. They packed Rhythm & Brews a couple of months ago, so a little extra room at Track 29 will be welcome. And there are plenty of other options for ringing in the new year, assuming we're not worn out from the Friday show.

BARRY: I hear the downtown hotel rooms are mostly booked already for New Year's Eve.
