FIVE TIPS plants for busy households

January is a good time to bring houseplants into your home, according to Ann Werner with The Barn Nursery in Chattanooga.

"Now that the Christmas lights and tinsel are tucked away, your home can look a little drab. Houseplants are an easy, quick and inexpensive way to brighten it up," Werner said.

Because of busy lifestyles, many people are searching for plants that are easy to maintain, she said.

"There are quite a few that are low-maintenance, but you can't neglect them forever," Werner said.

Following are five, low-maintenance houseplants, Werner said. "All of these plants are really easy, yet do need some minimal attention." Werner said.

1 Pothos. This trailing plant with heart-shaped leaves comes in green, variegated and lime. It's good for tables, mantels, kitchen counters and bathrooms.

2 Sansevieria or snake plant. It's a a tall, narrow plant with sword-shaped leaves ideal for small spaces. This plant likes to be pot bound. Water when soil is almost dry.

3 Dracaena. A very big houseplant family. Its leaves can vary from long and narrow to long and wide. Most are variegated and come in a variety of sizes.

4 Chinese evergreen. A big houseplant family with lance-shaped leaves. Some are solid green, but most are a mix of green and white. Some are striped, some speckled.

5 Kalanchoe. This flowering houseplant has round, nickel-shaped leaves topped with color brackets of red, yellow, purple and white. The key to success with this plant is light -- the more you have, the quicker it reblooms. The leaves hold water, so water only when soil is dry.
