After two months of preliminary rounds culling the talented from the tonedeaf, "American Idol" got down to business tonight with the first competitive round among the 13 finalists.

Rossville, Ga.'s Lauren Alaina Suddeth opened the show with a performance of Shania Twain's "Any Man of Mine."

Judges Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez were unenthusiastic about the performance, but gave her positive, constructive feedback.

Tyler stressed the importance of song choice. Lopez said, "You always sound so amazing but we want to feel you kick it into high gear." Jackson said, "That's a cool song and you sang it well, but we want America to see the girl we first saw ... not sure this song did quite that."

Viewers will learn Thursday night who goes home and who advances to the round of 12 when the results show airs at 8 p.m. on Fox.
