FCA to honor Georgia Christian Athlete of Year

The Lookout Mountain/Northwest Georgia chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes will celebrate the organization's 50 years of work in the area by hosting one of its past honorees on Monday.

Charles "Butch" Hannah, who was selected the Chattanooga-area FCA Christian Athlete of the Year from then-Lakeview High School in 1968 and was later a National Football League official and FCA board member, will speak to the Georgia chapter's sixth annual dinner at the Walker County Civic Center in Rock Spring.

At the 6:30 p.m. dinner, which is underwritten by Gateway Bank and Trust, one of eight high school seniors will be honored as the 2011 Christian Athlete of the Year.

The event, according to chapter director Greg Spradlin, honors "years they've been strong in their faith and in their character."

He also noted the event will occur on the same evening Ringgold and Heritage high schools will have shared space at Heritage High School for the first time since Ringgold High School was heavily damaged by a tornado.

The Christian Athlete of the Year will receive a $1,000 Dicky Clark Leadership Award scholarship, while the runner-up will get a $500 William "Fireball" Kinsey scholarship. The 9-year-old chapter also will present the Nate Schuster Courage Award.

The event also will honor the Christian Athlete of the Year from each of nine Georgia middle schools. The honorees include Alexis Case of Dade Middle School, Nick Crawford of Ringgold Middle School, Ashley Fenstermaker of Heritage Middle School, Randi King of LaFayette Middle School, Chelsea Langston of Menlo School, Abbi Mabry of Lakeview Middle School, Tiffany Maynard of Summerville Middle School, Dana Whittington of Chattanooga Valley Middle School and Carlie Woods of Trion Middle School.

The Lookout Mountain/Northwest Georgia chapter is composed of 36 school huddles in the chapter's four-county area.
