AVA Juried Exhibition

Twelve members were selected to display their work in annual event

January 13th, 2012 in Life Entertainment

Some of the best professional and emerging artists who are members of the Association for Visual Arts are exhibiting their work at AVA's Gallery.

Through Feb. 11, visitors can see the work of Sara Rouse, Sandy Boone, Neely Hyde, Nathan Foxton, Michael Holsomback, Maggie Vandewalle, Linda Johnson, Katie Claiborne, Jake Kelley, Gretchen Wagner, Gabriel Regagnon and Alan Shuptrine.

Rocky Horton, associate professor of art at Lipscomb University, served as the juror for the show. In choosing works to be included, he said he looked for a combination of skill and interest.

"Often artists will possess one or the other, but the selected artists have both," he said.

Horton added that he was also interested in the element of surprise or intrigue conveyed by an artwork.

"This can be the subtle intrigue created by a very finely crafted landscape or the shock of a more avant-garde installation work," said Horton.

In addition to jurying the show, Horton selected one artist to be featured in a solo exhibition at AVA in November.

"We wanted to give this opportunity for a more selective and competitive show to the many incredibly talented artists in Chattanooga," said Anne Willson, AVA's executive director. "The incentive for a solo exhibition in the fall will hopefully attract some of the best artists to apply for this show year after year. We are certainly pleased with the caliber of artists selected for this year's show."

AVA, 30 Frazier Ave., is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For information call, 265-4282.
