In-Town Gallery's February exhibition features a new series of oil paintings by Janis Wilkey. "Conversations" is composed of depictions of people in ordinary situations having everyday conversations. She strives to capture the images with economy and freshness in dynamic, strong compositions.
A lifelong resident of Southeast Tennessee, Wilkey chooses subjects for her paintings that are part of the culture she has experienced. But the type of interaction she illustrates is universal -- shared regardless of location.
"These images speak to our common humanity," she says in her artist's statement. "Aside from their clothes, they could be living in any part of the world."
Wilkey has studied oil painting and drawing at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, and also with Daud Akhriev. She paints murals, portraits, studio and plein-air work.
"Conversations" continues through February. A reception will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
In-Town Gallery, 26 Frazier Ave., is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Call 267-9214 for more information.
