Get A Clue: New Sherlock Holmes class registering

It doesn't take a detective to deduce that a Sherlock Holmes fad is in progress. The BBC series "Sherlock," the new CBS show "Elementary" and the Robert Downey Jr./Jude Law series of Holmes films are evidence of this.

Add to that last month's publication of "Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure" (background material for the Holmes story "The Adventure of Black Peter"), and the 125th anniversary in November of the publication of the first story, "A Study in Scarlet," and the case is made.

To learn more about the detective and his creator, Janis Hashe is leading a four-week class, "The Game's Afoot: Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle."

Classes will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays from Oct. 23 to Nov. 13 at the English Rose Tea Room, 1401 Market St. Class fee of $150 for the four-week series includes tea and dessert each week.

"We'll cover four of the major Holmes stories, combined with a discussion of Doyle --doctor, adventurer, author and finally, spiritualist," said Hashe. "Understanding Doyle's life shines a new light on the creation of Holmes and his enduring popularity."

Preregistration is required due to class limitations of 15 students. To register or for more information, contact Janis Hashe, 622-2862 or email jhashe@epbfi.com
