PEF coordinates school spruce-ups

What: The Public Education Foundation coordinated volunteers to paint three Hamilton County schools this past week, through a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, sprucing classrooms up before students arrived Aug. 8. Volunteers came from churches, school staffs' families and friends, community residents and PEF staff members.

Benefits: Dalewood Middle School, Ooltewah Middle School and Woodmore Elementary last week. During June and July, volunteers painted classrooms at Hillcrest and Red Bank elementary schools.

Chattanoggins tops $40,000 for Children's Hospital

What: About 150 individuals participated in the Chattanoggins head-shaving event at Chattanooga Market. Chattanoggins is a fundraiser started by Jack Skowronneck, 14, when he was 10 years of age to raise awareness about pediatric cancer. Individuals take pledges/donations from friends and co-workers to have their heads shaved at the fundraiser. An estimated 30 percent of head-shaving participants this year were females.

Benefits: The Skowronnek family has announced this year's Chattanoggins raised more than $40,000 for the Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's Hospital at Erlanger.
